A criminally underrated film, In the Valley of Elah is a piercing, unsettling meditation on the tolls of war. Anchored by Tommy Lee Jones’s mesmerizing silent burn of grief, In The Valley of Elah uses a murder mystery to wind its way around the dark heart of the Iraq conflict. Perhaps the reason for its commercial failure is that its resolution is so devastating. A downer, but one that matters.
