Students chefs present holiday delights at the Holiday Thieves Market.
The University of Iowa Fine Arts Council proudly presents the 2015 Holiday Thieves’ Market on December 5 and 6, featuring a jury-selected roster of over 100 fine artists. With several exciting additions to the show this year—including the Wine and Craft Beer Tasting, Holiday with the Chefs, and Festival of Trees—the Iowa Memorial Union will be a delightful way to usher in the holiday season.
Each year, a select group of artists is chosen to sell their wares at the market. They bring a variety of work, ranging from painting and photography to pottery, glass, textiles, and more. Among the many new artists coming to the Thieves’ Market this year is potter Theresa Bockenstedt, who will be bringing in her pottery wheel for demonstrations.
Wine & Craft Beer Tasting
Returning to the market is the popular Wine Tasting event, to be joined by the all-new Craft Beer Tasting on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Visitors will enjoy tasty samples from a wide variety of wineries and breweries. All patrons over the age of 21 are invited to participate.
Holiday with the Chefs
A new offering at the Thieves’ Market this year is Holiday with the Chefs on Saturday, December 5. This culinary experience will inspire participants with new interpretations of seasonal favorites from around the world. Chef stations will include Parisian pastries and New American entrees. This event takes place over two hours in order to allow time to eat unlimited gourmet food paired with cocktails and wine.
Tickets for this event are available at catering.uiowa.edu.
Festival of Trees
The Festival of Trees is another new addition to the holiday weekend at the IMU. Beautifully decorated trees will be available for bidding
during the festival, and all proceeds will benefit the Crisis Center of Johnson County.
Support the Arts!
Whether you’re looking for holiday gifts, purchasing artwork for your home, or looking for a fun holiday destination, the Thieves’ Market promises to be a spectacular event.
The show will be held on Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, December 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Iowa Memorial Union, located in downtown Iowa City. The event is free and open to the public.
The University of Iowa Fine Arts Council is a self-supporting, nonprofit student organization that takes great pride in promoting local and regional artists. The council puts on two major fine art exhibitions each year—a Spring Art Fair in early April, and the Holiday Thieves’ Market in early December. Both shows encourage a welcoming atmosphere that inspires arts outreach within the community while supporting local artists.
