Bill Sackter was the beloved founder of Wild Bill’s Coffee House.
Uptown Bill’s in Iowa City will celebrate what would have been the 101st birthday of its namesake Bill Sackter with an all-day birthday bash on Saturday, April 12, 2014. The party will feature live music from a different band and cake every hour. The fun begins at 10 a.m. Stick around until 4 p.m. for the harmonica rendition of Happy Birthday.
Performers include Julie and Dough Rideout, Rick Vornbrock, the Decrepitones, the Tom Guitar Studio All-Stars, The Family Folk Machine, Pennies on the Rail, and Mike Munson and Jake Ilika.
Bill Sackter was the founder of Wild Bill’s Coffee House, which still operates in North Hall on the University of Iowa Campus. Sackter first came to Iowa City from Minnesota with Bev and Barry Morrow, who become his guardians after Bill was released from the Faribault School for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic after spending 44 years there. He became famous in 1981 when Bill, a documentary about his life, aired on television.
